It’s safety first for these youngsters
Primary school pupils have been learning how to look after themselves and each other at a special training day.
Invicta Park Barracks, off Royal Engineers’ Road, was the venue for workshops for Year 6 youngsters from schools around Maidstone.
The event on Friday was organised by Salus, an organisation which works with young people and families across Kent.
Topics covered included safety around roads, water, fire, being online and electrics. They also looked at drugs and alcohol dangers.
Sally Williamson, director of Salus, said: “Through various scenarios, the event is designed to help pupils safely explore some of the dangers they may face as they become more independent and move on to secondary schools.”
Fire, police, Kent County Council, RNLI, British Transport Police, Kent Community Rail Partnership, the Kenward Trust and others also attended.
Martin Carter, one of the organisers, said: “Safety in Action provides a unique learning environment from which the children obtain valuable safety messages. This is my 21st year of involvement, and I now meet teachers who remember attending and what they learnt when they were in Year 6.
“It really is a lifelong learning experience, and it would not be possible without the continued support of all the agencies involved, for which we are extremely grateful.”
