CYCLING:

John Cockrill came from the back of the field to win the Cat 2/ 3 Crit race at the Cyclopark in Gravesend. The Abellio-SFA man made a bad start and was adrift of the bunch before climbing to fifth. He worked well with team-mate Tom Rowing, who went on to finish ninth, and as the laps counted down had only one rival for company. Cockrill moved into the gutter on the bell lap, hoping he could take advantage of a strong crosswind but his plan came to nothing. He attacked again on the final straight and crossed the line half a wheel clear to take his first win of the season. The next day, Cockrill set a two-minute PB at the Southborough District Wheelers Open 25 in Sussex. He finished with a time of 54min 35sec, taking fourth place. Geoff Wiles was the first winner of a trophy created in memory of Eddie Cook, one of the founders of the LVRC. It was presented to him by Cook’s daughter at the Hoggenberg Classic in Redbridge. He said: “I feel privileged to be the inaugural winner.”
