Day in the Park: The Friends of South Park will be holding their Day in the Park on Sunday, July 16 from 10am-3pm in South Park. Go along and find out what the Friends do. See how well the rose garden is doing, join the campaign to restore the fountain back to working order and take the opportunit­y to become a Friend as well and help, along with the parks team keep the park looking good and remaining the wonderful community asset that it is. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and cakes will be on sale. and there will also be a plant sale. Teston Sewing Bee group could be for you. Learn to cut patterns, etc. Take along your sewing machine and be guided in using it. There is room for 10 sewing machines. Refreshmen­ts provided. The group meets monthly in Teston Village Hall from 9am-1pm and the next meeting is on Saturday July 8. CROP talk: The WI guest speaker at its meeting on Thursday July 13 is Ken Usher from ‘CROP’ (Citizen’s Rights for Older People). He will be giving ideas about how his organisati­on can help in finding assistance with problems experience­d in latter years. Ken’s talk will be followed by a beetle drive. The monthly competitio­n is an insect brooch. The meeting is in the village hall and starts at 2pm. Silver snniversar­y: Our village sports pavilion is 25 years old on Wednesday, July 12, and since its opening has been used by thousands of children and adults A campaign was started on December 19, 1989 by the Wateringbu­ry Fields Associatio­n, to replace the appalling dilapidate­d portable cabins with a purpose built sports pavilion at a cost of £28,500. Grants of £6,000 were obtained from Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council and the Sports Council, together with a loan of £6,000 from the Sports Council. Numerous fundraisin­g activities were carried out over the next two years, and the new sports pavilion, built by John Childs & Associates, was officially opened on July 12, 1992. Coach outing: Non-members are welcome to join the history society coach outing to Watts Gallery and Artists’ Village and Loseley Park Manor House near Guildford on Wednesday, July 19. The coach leaves Wateringbu­ry Hotel at 9.15am. The trip includes entries to both venues, guided tour of Loseley Manor and afternoon tea and costs a modest £40 per person. The owners of this superb 13th century manor house invite you to visit their 10 acre plantsman’s garden for a suggested donation of £5. Enjoy the large formal rose garden and herbaceous garden of island beds with a rose and clematis walkway leading to a garden of China roses. There is a fine collection of trees and shrubs, sunken pond garden, terraces , bamboos, glen garden and acer lawn. A young pinetum is taking shape and sculptures are interestin­gly displayed and there are wonderful open country views. Dogs on leads welcome, wheelchair access, parking, toilets, refreshmen­ts. Correspond­ent: Jenny Scott Mob: 07785 974951 Summer playscheme: As the school holidays approach, the summer playscheme prepares to provide activities for five to 13 year olds from Monday to Friday, July 24 to August 11 from 11am-3pm each weekday, based at Yalding School. Activities will include crafts, messy play, music, table tennis, pool, outdoor sports, Jaws ‘n’ Claws, water fights and an end of scheme party. The cost is £5 per day per child, or £4 when two children from a family are attending the same session. The scheme is provided by the parish council, with KCC support, and is Ofsted registered. Surgery afternoon closure: The surgery will be closed on Thursday, July 13 from 1pm for staff training. Mood for music: Relative Minors, a local group of talented musicians and soloists, invites us all to their concert on Sunday, July 9 at 6.30pm in the church. The concert, called In the Mood for Music, will feature classics, medleys, show music and pop. Tea and cakes will be served during the interval. Teddy parachute jump: At last week’s church fete, the teddy bear parachute jump proved a great attraction and raised £120. Michael Stewart judged the entries, and winners were as follows: The best dressed child’s teddy was Poppy which belongs to Sophie Maryon, and the best dressed adult’s teddy belongs to Brenda Hansen. The most sponsored teddies were Kit and Eleanor Cutler’s and Tim Chapman’s. The best teddy jumps were from Daniel Gent’s teddy, aptly named Daredevil Dan and Rachel Curley’s teddy called Tea Room Ted Mark 3. Thank you to all who took part, helped or donated in any way to the fete. 100 club winners: The Friends of Yalding Church 100 club July draw took place on Sunday. Well done everyone who responded, but we cannot stop there. The group is exploring the heritage setting of the site, and the very special mix of reasons why Yalding should not suffer over-developmen­t.
