Saunders won’t be complacent

-

Jay Saunders bids to lead Maidstone into the first round of the FA Cup for the fourth year in a row this weekend. United host Bostik Premier Enfield Town in the final qualifying round on Saturday, looking for a place in Monday’s televised draw (BBC2, 7pm) There’s two divisions between the sides but Saunders is taking nothing for granted. He said: “You always look forward to the FA Cup but it is a banana skin. They’re a new side this year, they lost a lot of players to Braintree. “We’ve had them watched and we’ll do our homework and look to get a positive result. “In the FA Cup, it’s just about getting through to the next round. “It would be great to get to the first round for the fourth year running. Not a lot of clubs have done that but we’ve got to get ourselves right.” Maidstone and Enfield were in the same league only three seasons ago, so it shows how far they’ve come to be seen as a scalp. Saunders, National League manager-of-the-month for September, said: “People forget that we’re in only our second season at this level. “It’s a tricky one. Enfield are always a difficult side to play against and we had it when Billericay came here last year at the same stage. “It’s a battle, you need that first goal or a couple of goals under your belt but it’s not easy.” Crowds are always down in FA Cup qualifiers but Saunders has urged Stones fans to turn out. He said: “I think people now just expect us get to the first round and get a Football League club, but it doesn’t always work like that. “We need the support behind us, so hopefully they’ll turn up in numbers.” In the event of a draw, the replay will take place on Tuesday night.
