Cats prove calming influence for rehab centre residents

- By Guy Bell gbell@thekmgroup.co.uk @gbellKM

A drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre has recruited six cats to improve the recovery programmes of its residents.

The Kenward Trust’s group of cats are supported by staff and residents on the 15-acre site in Yalding.

Responsibility for looking after the welfare of the pets and developing trusting relationships with them has added therapeutic value to the programme for those who are staying there as part of their recovery.

The Cats Protection Mid Kent Branch has helped the trust with food donations and care advice.

One of the residents said: “I came to Kenward House rehab because of my drinking addiction. I was pleased to be given the opportunity to help look after the cats living on site because I love animals and have previously had cats of my own.

“At first they were very nerv- ous of me, but gradually I have earned their trust and now when I put their food down they come around me and a couple of them have even let me stroke them. They are beautiful cats and they are very affectionate towards each other.”

Being in the company of cats is proved to help with stress relief, while also banishing anxiety.

Cats, along with many other animals, are the perfect way to distract from difficult periods of our life and the six additions at Kenward House in Kenward Road are proving to be no different.

The resident said: “It is a great feeling for me to see how happy and healthy they are and it gives me enormous satisfaction and fulfilment to have the privilege of having responsibility for their care.

“If only they knew how much they have helped me in recovering my own health and wellbeing.”

Anyone wishing to assist the Kenward Trust with their care of the cats is invited to make donations of food for the feline group via the Cats Protection’s Mid Kent Branch, via 0345 371 2758.
