TONBRIDGE: WHITNELL FACES SECOND KNEE OP AS ANGELS’ INJURY WOES INCREASE

-

Tonbridge forward Tommy Whitnell needs another operation after suffering a setback in his recovery from a knee injury. Whitnell had surgery in June and Angels were hoping to have him back by now but there’s been complications. Boss Steve McKimm said: “Tommy’s going to be out for another couple of months. “He had something at the back of his knee that was operated on in June but he’s had a scan and has exactly the same injury again. “I don’t know if the first procedure didn’t go right – I’m not medically minded – but it’s a blow for us.” There was more bad news when Chris Kinnear (groin) and Luke Blewden (knee) went off early in the League Cup second round defeat by Hythe on Tuesday, Alex Akrofi missing from the spot as the visitors won 5-3 on penalties after a goalless draw. McKimm can’t see them featuring in the Bostik Premier game at Staines on Saturday but centre-half George Beaven is set to play after four weeks out. Beaven’s return has allowed McKimm to send youngster Callum AdonisTaylor on loan to Whyteleafe for a month. McKimm said: “George will give us everything an experienced centre-half should give but I must mention Callum who’s been outstanding. “We’ve thrown him in at the deep end and he’s coped but the last couple of games have taken their toll and, being a young lad, he’s taken it personally. “Getting him out on loan is the right thing to do. It gives him a chance to enjoy his football and get games rather than playing under pressure here.” Staines sit fifth, in the final play-off spot, with Tonbridge five points back in 11th. McKimm said: “Staines are doing well. They’re scoring loads of goals and don’t concede many. “It’s a tough game with a fully fit squad, never mind going there with half measures but we’ll do our best.” Last weekend’s game at Enfield Town was postponed due to a water supply problem at their ground. It has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 16.
