Errors blight Bulls’ winning return

-

Aylesford looked rusty at times in their win against Crowborough on Saturday – and it was hardly surprising. They hadn’t played for three weeks following the Christmas break and then the postponement of their trip to Crawley. Bulls still produced some nice rugby but the error count was high, which was down to having so much time off. They got the job done, with a bonus-point win keeping them four points behind London 3 South East leaders Thanet, who have played a game more. Aylesford trailed to a penalty but Stevie Stewart’s try made it 5-3 at half-time. The hosts took charge of the second half with Simon Rumsey scoring a converted try and a penalty, followed by tries for Pete Webdale and a second for Stewart, converted by Rumsey. Coach Jay Jenkins said: “We dominated territory and possession in the first half and did everything but score in the first 30 minutes, which was down to poor execution, the final pass going to ground and just our basic error count being too high. “They took the lead against the run of play but we got over in the corner and at half-time we regrouped and talked about keeping our error count down because we were playing some good stuff. We just weren’t finishing off our moves. “They changed the way they played in the second half, played a tighter game and drew us into a battle up front but we scored the three tries to get away from them, including one from the last play. “It was pretty ugly but we got the bonus-point win. “We looked rusty after three weeks without a game, which showed in some of the errors we made, so it was more relief than being pleased to win.” Aylesford travel to Southampton to play Trojans in the quarter-finals of the Senior Vase on Saturday. Trojans are fourth in London 3 South West. Jenkins said: “I don’t know much about them but they’re going fairly well in their league. “It will be a tough road trip for us but we’re focused on coming away with the result.”
