Steering wheels go in new BMW raids
Police probe after another spate of break-ins
Police are investigating yet another spate of steering wheel thefts after raiders broke into BMWs in Penenden Heath.
Officers began a probe into the break-ins in November when steering wheels were taken from the German-made cars in St Francis Close and Heathfield Close.
During the same night of Tuesday, November 21, a car radio, satellite navigation device and steering wheel were stolen from a BMW parked in Northway.
The latest theft of a BMW steering wheel took place in Boxley Road between Friday, January 12, and Saturday, January 13.
The criminals also forced their way into BMWs in Aylesford over the course of the same evening also taking the same item from vehicles parked in Teapot Lane, Priory Grove and Woodland Road. The thieves also stole valuables including laptop computers and designer sunglasses.
It is believed the burglars are breaking locks and damaging windows to get into the driver’s side of the cars.
In other parts of the country BMW steering wheels have been listed for sale on eBay, commanding prices of up to £1,000.
Another spate of similar thefts took place in Higham on December 4 when four separate cars were targeted and had their drivers’ wheels taken.
Inspector Maxine Martin said: “I would ask residents to remain vigilant and report anybody acting suspiciously during the hours of darkness by calling call 101 or 999 in an emergency.
“I would also advise car owners in the Aylesford and Penenden Heath areas, particularly those with BMWs, to park their cars in a well-lit place, on a driveway or in a garage overnight if possible.”
