Maddams quits chairman’s role

Roger Maddams has stepped down as Tonbridge chairman – after only three weeks.

Maddams, a chartered accountant, made the decision due to work commitments.

His predecessor, Steve Churcher, has returned as interim chairman while the club search for a replacement.

Angels boss Steve McKimm said: “All of a sudden Roger’s been hit with a massive workload and he wouldn’t have been able to cope with the day-to-day business of being chairman alongside his normal job and, let’s not forget, it’s a voluntary position.

“He’s had to step down which is unfortunate because I thought he would have been good at it and I was building a good relationship with him.”

McKimm is again working with Mr Churcher, the man who brought him to the club three-and-a-half years ago.

The Angels boss said: “If you haven’t got a chairman the club doesn’t function as it should do, so Steve has stepped in to bridge the gap.

“I still speak to Steve about certain things anyway and now he’s back on board as interim chairman, we carry on where we left off before he stood down. We always had a good relationship.”

Back on the pitch, McKimm branded Tonbridge’s first-half performance at Met Police on Tuesday night a shambles.

They lost 2- 0 with the goals coming in a three-minute spell before the half-hour mark.

Defeat leaves them 11th in the Bostik Premier going into Saturday’s home game against bottom side Burgess Hill, although Angels will be boosted by the signing of Ryan Worrall from Eastbourne.

McKimm said: “The first half on Tuesday was a shambles – there was no work rate and we conceded two sloppy goals.

“We had a go in the second half which you’ve got to do when you’re 2- 0 down but it was too little, too late.

“As I told the players afterwards, I make decisions on the team, the system and the subs and their decisions are on the pitch to make the right pass, the right run, the right tackle and we failed on every front in the first half.

“They were awful at Met Police and they know that because they’re an honest bunch.”

Saturday’s game at Leiston was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
