Replacements shine for depleted Bulls

SHEPPEY AYLESFORD

-

Depleted Aylesford had nine players missing at Sheppey on Saturday but it didn’t stop them winning.

The Islanders are struggling near the foot of London 3 South East but gave promotion-chasing Bulls a tough test in horrible conditions.

Aylesford were happy with a 24- 0 victory, particularly with so many players out.

Coach Jay Jenkins said: “We’ve got some inconsistency in selection at the moment.

“Some people are away, some are carrying knocks but it’s the first time this season we’ve had nine out.

“We brought a number of new faces in which shows the strength in depth of the squad. With nine coming back we’ll only get stronger.”

A penalty try just before half-time set Aylesford on their way.

They pulled clear with three second-half tries, one for Michael Jackson and two from Dion Comerford, who added a conversion.

Jenkins said: “It was a tough game. Sheppey’s coach confirmed afterwards it was the strongest side they’d had out all season and they played well in the first 40 minutes.

“They frustrated us, stopped us playing and tried to disrupt what we try to do. We couldn’t get over the line but we got the penalty try before half-time and in the second half we got back to playing basic rugby. We did the simple stuff and looked the better side.

“It wasn’t a great performance but the conditions were difficult with the cold and wind and rain. We had to win ugly.”

Aylesford, who remain four points behind leaders Thanet, go to Hastings & Bexhill on Saturday. Jenkins has added to his coaching staff by bringing in former Medway and Canterbury player Huw Collins. The pair previously worked together in the development squad at Medway.

Jenkins said: “He’s taken a couple of sessions and I’m pleased he’s joined the team.”
