Turner’s terrific treble

Maidstone

-

Maidstone men’s 1st XI won 6-2 at home to Brighton & Hove in Kent/Sussex Regional 1 on Saturday.

The injury-hit hosts went 1- 0 down in the first 15 minutes but had recovered by half-time to be level at 2-2.

Player/coach Richard Turner completed a hat-trick in the second half and there were also goals for captain Jimmy Christmas and Phil King.

Maidstone are fourth, five points behind leaders Eastbourne, ahead of Saturday’s derby at Sutton Valence.

The ladies lost 5-2 away to Sevenoaks 2nds but emerged from the match with plenty of credit.

Sevenoaks grabbed an early goal before Hannah Durston went close for the visitors.

However, four more goals before half-time left Maidstone looking at damage limitation in the second half.

They managed that fairly well, pulling one goal back through Emily Bush, before Durston converted Katie Gibbons’ cross at the back post.

Defeat leaves Maidstone 11th in the East Hockey Premier Division.

Maidstone 2nds came from behind to beat Old Williamsonians 2-1 in the Kent Women’s League, Premier Division.

They were punished for some poor defending when OWs struck inside two minutes but a half-time team talk got them back on track.

Jenny Duggan equalised after good work by Victoria O’Reilly and Rachel Davies before Gracey Mei Wilsher netted the winner following a short corner.

In Division 4, the ladies’ 4ths won 2- 0 at home to Remnants with Belinda Weinrich turning the ball goal-bound for the first before Kay Bowley swept in, while the men’s 4ths remain top of Kent Open Division 2 after a 3-1 win over Folkestone 6ths.

Scott Abbott opened the scoring before top scorer Ian Lowe made it 2- 0.

Andy Moodie and Oliver Priestley combined for Maidstone’s third goal from a late penalty corner.
