First-half collapse leaves too much to do

Much-changed Sutton Valence lost 5- 0 at Worthing in Kent/Sussex Regional 1 on Saturday. Valence had several players missing and knew it would be a tough game. They conceded from a short corner and were 4- 0 down by half-time. Coach Henry Robinson’s team-talk saw Valence begin the second half with a new lease of life. They made headway in the Worthing half and put together some good moves, including one to set up Andy Lee, who was blocked by a defender. But with Valence pushing hard, Worthing scored a breakaway fifth. Alex Duckett was man-ofthe-match on his debut. Valence 3rds lost 5- 0 at Deal in Kent Open Premier C. The visitors struggled to find their rhythm and conceded twice in a poor start. They eventually started to string some passes together but lacked the killer instinct to get the better of the Deal goalkeeper and conceded again on the break. Another two goals followed as Valence became more fragmented, although man-of-the-match Freddie Hulbert had his best game of the season. Valence veterans scored four times in the opening 10 minutes of a 7- 0 win over Wallington in the Southern Counties Hockey Conference. Roger Fermor struck inside 60 seconds, with Rupert Humphrey’s double and Nigel Bardsley’s goal from a short corner extending the lead. Stuart Bates weaved his way through for No.5 and Valence scored again early in the second half with Bob Bartlett’s solo effort. Bates finished a cross following a good move up the left as Valence, whose manof-the-match was Julian Mills, completed the scoring. The 2nds’ Kent Open Premier A match against Gillingham Anchorians was postponed due to a frozen pitch for the second week and the 4ths were handed a 5- 0 walkover against New Beccehamians in Kent Open Division 4.
