A police officer has been injured after being attacked in a graveyard.

A major emergency response swung into action in Manston Road, Ramsgate, around 10pm on Friday evening.

The officer, who was on duty, was knocked unconscious.

It happened at the St Laurence graveyard. There was also a police presence in another street.

Officers were helped by the National Police Air Service helicopter.

Residents reported hearing the police helicopter circling around Ramsgate, Dumpton and Newington. By midnight the helicopter had reportedly left the area, as had police units in King Street. The next day a heavy police presence remained in St Lawrence High Street and entrances to the church had been sealed off.

Police also confirmed armed units had been scrambled due to reports one of the offenders was carrying a firearm. No shots had been fired.

No arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information is asked to call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting 02-1242.
