Social media is another weapon to be careful of

-

In 2018 social media is perhaps just as dangerous as any weapon.

Recently a popular DJ coined the term ‘cyber-rattling’ to replace the out-dated ‘sabrerattling’. Who even has a sabre anymore? Consider this though, Donald Trump wielding an actual sabre is distinctly less concerning than Donald Trump being let loose on Twitter.

The sad truth is like it or loathe it 280-character online messages are now an accepted form of diplomacy.

But maybe the unthinkable is happening, maybe social media is going out of fashion?

Mark Zuckerberg and all his merry men driven from the web by a band of antiheroes led by Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin on a horse destined to be made into a gourmet burger.

In the last month we’ve watched as Mr Zuckerberg wore a suit and said sorry, not once but at the last count 467 times.

Before that a member of the Kardashian dynasty said she didn’t like Snapchat anymore leading to a plummet of £1 billion in its value.

Now, perhaps most significantly, Wetherspoon is deleting all of its social media accounts.

The company that brought you Steak Club Tuesday and an app allowing you to order pints direct to your table is boycotting Twitter and Facebook, preferring to publicise via its own website and magazine.

A pub chain almost solely responsible for the Brexit vote is packing its bags and leaving and, much in the same way Kylie Jenner’s Snapchat review scored a body blow for the instant messaging giant, expect middle-aged pie-loving ale-drinkers to follow suit. Could this be the end? Almost certainly not, but just imagine for a moment, a world where instead of Donald Trump firing out hastily typed, INTERMITTENTLY CAPITALISED earlymorning insults to his peers which went global, he instead included them all in a monthly, beer-soaked magazine.
