‘Instinct never fails to amaze me’

-

One woman who knows all about the inestimable value of an assistance dog is Alison Tomsett.

The 51-year-old from Snodland owes much to her four-legged pals who sprung into action when she was alone and fell backwards out of her wheelchair.

Recounting the scenario for Dog AID (Assistance in Disability), Ms Tomsett said it was down to Millie and Jasper to keep her safe and well until medical assistance could reach her.

She said: “The natural instinct of these working dogs never fails to amaze me.

“I was on the floor for 45 minutes.

“Millie was licking my nose as if she was worried I would not stay awake and Jasper snuggled right up to me trying to keep me warm until the paramedics arrived.”

Sadly Millie needed to retire after a diagnosis of Lumber Sacral Disease, which is when Millie arrived on the scene.

However, even when ill, Millie found herself needing to take Jasper under her wing.

Alison added: “It was lovely to see Jasper try so hard - however if he couldn’t quite grasp what was being asked of him, Millie would step in and show him.”

Sadly, Millie passed away and Jasper now accompanies Alison by himself.

“Jasper gives me the confidence to be as independent as my body allows. He is an amazing dog,” she added.
