Cemetery scheme spells the end of pet crematorium plans

-

Proposals to expand Maidstone Cemetery and re-open the chapel appear to have spelled the end for plans to create a new pet crematorium in the town.

Permission was granted last year for a purpose-built centre in the grounds of Vinters Park Crematorium in Bearsted Road, but councillors later decided to put the scheme on hold until 2020 as they prioritised improving the authority’s existing bereavement services.

It was initially suggested the new crematorium would cost around £600,000 to launch, but would generate revenue of some £1million in the first five years.

Veterinary practices arrange most pet cremations, with only 10-15% of animals dying at home, according to council reports.

However, subsequent surveys carried out by council officers indicated the growth of the business was likely to be far slower.

Now, the town hall looks to have scrapped the project entirely, after councillors last week gave the green light to approve more than £200,000 of spending on expanding the cemetery on Sutton Road.

Bosses said in a report: “Given the business case identified for the work at the cemetery, it is proposed that this funding is allocated for this work and no longer held for the pet crematorium project.

“Should a more compelling business case for a pet crematorium be identified, new funding would have to be sought through the Heritage, Culture and Leisure Committee and Policy and Resources Committee.”

The closest facility is Sandhole Pet Crematorium in Snodland, which provides the services for dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles. Maidstone will see 20 new jobs created as an American bar chain opens its second diner in Kent.

Family-owned Hancock’s will be opening in Earl Street this month. The chain already has branches in Chatham and Camberley.

The new Hancock’s American Kitchen and Bar will offer a range of full and part-time roles. it will seat 130 guests.

Director David Chick said: “We represent a bright place with fab food and fun surroundings where cocktails flow and everyone’s welcome. We’re not exclusively a ‘meat lover’s paradise’ though - our range of vegetarian options is also extensive. It is due to open on Saturday, September 15.
