Brexit mystery a riddle wrapped in an enigma

- Ed McConnell The KM Group columnist with his own look at the world emcconnell@thekmgroup.co.uk

Quite deliberately I have not written about Brexit for quite a while.

I was lambasted by one reader following a column in which I declared the whole thing was boring and that made me think about what I’d said.

After a while, I simultaneously fell asleep and concluded I was right.

However, I still haven’t the foggiest what is going on and I’m pretty certain the rest of the British public haven’t either.

I’ll buy a Jacob Rees-Mogg doll for the first man, woman or child who can explain to me in 10 seconds what the backstop actually is.

Brexit has become one of those words that either we’re all expected to know the full meaning of or no one knows the meaning of so is just crammed into articles in the hope no one will ask any questions.

I write this on Monday and by the time this newspaper is published on Thursday who knows what MPs will have done.

One certainty though is the people who originally voted in the referendum still won’t know what is going to happen.

It’s all well and good saying folk didn’t know what they were voting for and therefore there should be a second referendum but the problem is they still don’t know what they’d be voting for.

The last two years has probably been an example of the worst communications campaign ever. Simple terms aren’t explained. I’m not aware of any release from the government explaining in simple terms what Theresa May’s nightmare/best possible deal actually means.

The government has even managed to be held in contempt of parliament for the first time in history because they didn’t release crucial legal advice.

Forget about giving 52% of the British public what they want - how about telling the whole of the British public what they’ll get.
