Tragic cyclist was ‘nicest man you could ever meet’

Tributes to football coach and father-of-two killed in crash

- By Will Janes

The wife of a cyclist killed in a crash with a tipper truck has paid a loving tribute to her “generous and caring” husband. Father-of-two, Dan Waite, from Bearsted, was pronounced dead at the scene, on the A20 near Hollingbourne at around 8pm on Wednesday, July 3. Paramedics rushed to the Maidstone-bound carriageway near the junction with Leeds village, but were unable to save the 43-year-old.

Sarah Waite, his wife, said: “Dan ‘Waitey’ was a larger than life character, who really was the nicest person you could ever meet. His big grin was infectious and he had time for everyone. Dan was a generous, caring son, husband, father, brother and friend who is sorely missed.

“He had a real zest for life and those around him loved his passion and being in his company. “His ability to give will still remain as we remember him for the amazing man and father that he is. His stories will help us fill the gap that his presence leaves in our daily lives.

“Dan did not get nearly enough time to finish what he was here to do. Those who knew him will feel privileged and grateful to have had a chance to know him.” As well as being a keen skier and cyclist, Mr Waite loved football and was a youth coach at Vinters FC for six years, most recently helping the under 13s team. A club spokesman said: “Dan was a well respected member of the Vinters family, a great manager and coach, a friendly guy who would always stop for a chat and who always had a smile on his face.”

The self-employed plumber leaves behind son Jake, 13, and daughter Aimee, 10.

Mr Waite grew up in Loose and attended Loose Primary School then Oldborough Manor Community School, now New Line Learning Academy.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash. Call 01622 798 538, quoting SM/NR/71/10.
