Goudhurst’s Freya Black has vowed to come back stronger after finishing fifth at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

Black, 18, represented the British Youth Sailing Team in the girls’ 29er fleet alongside crew Millie Aldridge at the regatta in Poland.

The pair were picked for the team following their winning performance at the recent RYA Youth National Championships. It was their second Youth Worlds, having finished eighth last year in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“This regatta was one of the most challenging events we have done,” said Black. “It tested every skill we had.

“It was a long regatta and we had to look at ourselves and deal with some big setbacks but we did just that and we move on with a positive mindset.” Invicta Panthers have gone through the whole London SE League season unbeaten.

They beat Hemel Stags 18-10 in the final at the home of London Broncos. Ben Hursey Hord scored two early tries to give Panthers an 8-0 lead but Hemel hit back and went into half-time 10-8 ahead. Panthers turned their pressure into a third try for Lewis Smith, who finished superbly in the corner, and the result was finally put beyond doubt when Matt Jones converted Seyi Ogundogba’s late try. Captain Bill Leyland said: “I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been to play alongside the boys this season and what a great job the whole team and parents did in the last few months which led to our victory on the weekend.

“Thank you for your dedication and the passion which you have had this season.”
