Highs and lows of school league tables revealed

League table results for Maidstone show Grammar schools have topped the attainment and progress rankings for 2019. Data from the Department for Education revealed Invicta Grammar School, in Huntsman Lane, came out on top in the area for the academic achievemen­ts of year 11 pupils, with an Attainment 8 score of 72. Schools around the country are ranked on Attainment 8 scores, based on how well pupils have performed in up to eight qualificat­ions, including English, Maths, three English Baccalaure­ate qualificat­ions and three other additional approved qualificat­ions.

Invicta was closely followed by Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, in Buckland Road, scoring 69.7, Maidstone Grammar School, in Barton Road, scoring 65.4 and Oakwood Park Grammar School, in Oakwood Road, achieving 61.5.

As well as their high attainment score, Maidstone Grammar School for Girls and Invicta Grammar were ranked in the top 15% of schools in England achieving ‘well above average’ for their Progress 8 score, which assesses the progress pupils made between the end of year 6 and the end of year 11. Joining them in that category was St Simon Stock Catholic School, in Oakwood Park, which received a score of 50.7.

The mixed secondary school was the highest ranking non-grammar school for attainment, scoring 50.7.

In all four grammars, more than 98% of year 11 pupils were awarded a 9-4 pass in both English and Maths.

Both St Augustine Academy, in Oakwood Road, and New Line Learning Academy, in Boughton Lane, were further down the rankings for attainment, progress and pass rates in english and maths in Maidstone. The academies were ranked as ‘well below average’ for pupil progress.

Another school falling within the category for Progress 8 scores was Bower Grove School, but this is caters for children with special educationa­l needs New Line Learning is ranked in the overall Kent picture as ninth from bottom, while St Augustine Academy is 15 places above the lowest scoring Kent school - which was Hartsdown Academy in Margate.
