Disrespect is not the norm

-

It is sad the country should only come together in unity and be at one on Remembrance Sunday. Why can this display of tolerance, compassion, civility and respect for democracy, not be demonstrated throughout the year?

We now seem to be in an age where these tenets have been replaced by intolerance, disrespect for the views of others and autocracy.

Nowadays, intolerant hysteria on the streets, politician foolhardiness and total disrespect for democracy is the norm. Those who gave their lives so that we may enjoy a life of civilised freedom and tolerance, are no doubt shuddering in their graves at what they witness today. No one should be in any doubt that this is the greatest country in the world, always selflessly sacrificing itself for the good of all; and not self-serving but giving service to others.

Time and time again this country has proven its resilience and come what may this country will come through as a shining beacon for all to follow. As President Kennedy said “think not what the country can do for you but what you can do for your country”.

Cllr Winston Michael

Ashford Independent communicated to the KM regarding the Leeds/Langley bypass and have been exasperated by the KCC and MBC’s lack of forethought in planning for the County town’s infrastructure.

Why was Rob Shroeder’s father snubbed as recently as December 2015 when he’d offered land and finance to get the project under way?

Yes, he also wanted to build houses but isn’t that just what the big developers are allowed to do, promising schools, surgeries and other facilities in exchange for a certain number of houses and sometimes not fulfilling their promises, even to the extent of asking for the playground provision to be waivered and the number of houses increased. Traffic on the south side of Maidstone is soon going to be chaotic with KCC’s proposal for a controlled roundabout to replace the existing traffic lights, following the demolition of The Wheatsheaf.

Yes, the roundabout will be larger than the previous one but the numerous large lorries aiming for the M20 will still have to come down either the A229 or A249.

This is already one of the most polluted areas in Maidstone which makes it even more urgent to get a bypass.

Let us hope that Mr Shroeder’s offer will be considered.
