Max: Win’s a morale boost

Gillingham’s midweek cup win will give them added confidence for their weekend trip to AFC Wimbledon, says captain Max Ehmer.

Ehmer played a crucial role in central defence to help nullify the threat posed by Sunderland on Tuesday. The Gills kept the visitors out, denying them even one shot at goal in more than 120 minutes of football.

The skipper said: “It’s two wins on the bounce now. AFC Wimbledon haven’t played extra-time, but they have done a long journey (to play Doncaster in their FA Cup replay) so it probably events itself out.

“We are in high spirits and we will look forward to the game.” Brandon Hanlan got the winning goal in extra-time and Ehmer was delighted.

He said: “Brandon works his socks off every game. He probably doesn’t get the amount of goals he deserves but on Tuesday showed how hard he has worked. He got smashed in the ribs but is still putting his body everywhere and that’s credit to him.

“He is one player I would not like to play against in the league. Once the goals start flying in I think he can go to the very top. “He had a couple of chances but he has worked so hard to get his goal.”

Boss Steve Evans praised

Ehmer, saying his midweek performance was up there with the best that he had witnessed. “I did all right,” said Ehmer.

“He went a bit mad at me for the yellow card just before half-time. “Their player had hold of my shorts, I couldn’t move, that’s why I had to bring him down or he was through.

“I did all right but there are always things I can improve on. I am happy, it’s another clean sheet and another win so I can’t complain.

“That is what defenders get judged on.”
