LOVE IS ALL AROUND AS COUNTY REACTS It’s been yet another stunning week of community action with people supporting others in need as we continue to face coronavirus lockdown BIRTHDAY TO BOSS’S £5K GIFT REMEMBER

A woman was ‘thrilled’ after volunteers organised a special birthday treat for her while in isolation.

Doreen Dawson, who turned 89 on Thursday, was surprised when a team from Folkestone’s new community hub arrived on her doorstep. They were armed with cakes and ready to sing happy birthday.

The excursion was organised by volunteer Olivia Ensor-Page, who had spoken to Doreen last week about delivering some shopping. During the call, Olivia discovered Doreen’s birthday was approaching.

Olivia in turn delivered cakes, made by the team at Anna’s Tea Room, to Doreen’s door while other volunteers sang to her over the phone.

A delighted Doreen, who is a retired church secretary, said: “I just couldn’t believe it!

“It was such a surprise and I’m so thrilled – I’ve never had anything like it.”

A restaurateur has made a generous gift of £5,000 to help support key workers in the health service.

Yahiee Ahad, who owns the Raj Bari Indian restaurant in Sevenoaks, says he decided to make the donation after seeing first-hand how hard NHS staff and carers are finding things. Despite the challenges facing the hospitality trade during the lockdown, the businessman felt moved to do what he could with the aid for NHS Charities Together. He said: “We have a lot of NHS staff collect takeaways from us or order deliveries after a shift, because we offer discount to doctors and nurses who live locally.

“But since the lockdown started, this number has gone up. We see the nurses when they come to collect after a shift, and you can just see how tired they are, how hard they’re working.” In addition to the cash donation, staff at the Raj Bari also produced tiffin boxes – a traditional Indian packed lunch – to be given to key workers.
