During the pandemic “lockout” I have, in slippered feet and in the comfort of my home, revisited many of the churches featured in Simon Jenkins’ book ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’.

There I see, as though with my own eyes, a revelation of all that is most marvellous and most beautiful of our parish churches.

Whether a believer or not one cannot be immune to the spirits of such places.

Words printed in the final chapter of the introduction to the book best sums up, perhaps, what many of us feel. That our parish churches are the bonds that have brought the English people together in village and town through a thousand years of history and it is through the churches of England that we learn who we are, and I might add, compassion for one another.

people are pulling in a different direction of their own.

We are all going to face some loss in this emergency yet there are those who see the whole situation as a threat solely to their capital interests. We have almost grown used to the offensive sight of multimillionaires protesting that the government should repay all their private capital losses. Private firms might make profits in stable times but when they are in real trouble they look to the state to recompense their losses.

potentially fatal – like flu (which kills around 20,000 a year) - this means CV-19 is no longer in the Ebola/ SARS category. One might have thought that the news would have been something for the pundits to cheer about but they are more interested in spreading hysteria, panic and fear. Frightened people are much easier to manipulate.

The lockdown is an overreaction. We don’t shut down the economy or turn the country into a police state every time there is a flu epidemic.

It’s quite likely more will die from the ‘cure’ than the disease - from heart attacks, strokes, cancelled NHS operations, suicides and other untreated illnesses. OAPs are being brainwashed into believing they are a burden.

Our clueless career politicians have no exit strategy or plan. What a way to run a country.
