Overwhelming support for revamp
Councillors unanimously backed the proposed upgrades to Maidstone bus station.
Council leader Martin Cox praised the new designs saying they looked “very good,” but suggested the introduction of a ‘bug hotel’ to make up for the lack of plants to support local wildlife. Another change echoed by several committee members involved adding large numbers to the colourful pillars to make each stop clearly visible to passengers.
Cllr Wendy Young also asked designers to consider using antigraffiti paint to prevent further unwanted damage once the renovations have been completed.
While Cllr Keith Adkinson was pleased changes were finally being made, he said he would have liked to have seen a one-way system, similar to the bus station in Canterbury. Architect Felix Lewis explained that would not be possible without completely redesigning the road layout across the whole town centre.
