Nigel steps out of his box in bid for column inches

Politics wasn’t the only thing Nigel Farage stepped out of this week.

The former Ukip leader and Brexit talisman announced his three decades of campaigning were over on Saturday and then, just a day later, released a video of himself emerging from a faded red phone box.

“Hello, I’m Nigel Farage and Cameo is my latest incarnation,” he announced, his entrance and choice of wording combining to suggest he was, in fact, the new Doctor Who. But who would be the natural enemy of his ‘Doctor’?

And what would the Daleks think about fisheries?

The Brexit debate has enough input already without opening it up to intergalactic villains, but I think it’s fair to assume they’d be fiercely pro-freedom of movement - as long as it doesn’t involve getting up the stairs.

But Nigel will not be inheriting the role. Instead he will be performing as himself on online celebrity video message service Cameo - the market leader of an increasingly popular way to get your favourite famous face to record a special message just for you.

It means for just shy of £70 you can pay him to send his regards “whether it be for Mother’s Day, a birthday, to surprise somebody, I’m happy to do it but... I will mention Brexit, I will mention Trump,” he threatened, while dressed like Rupert the Bear on a shooting excursion.

In some ways a former political powerhouse whose efforts more than any other led to the vote which changed a nation resorting to flogging internet clips for beer money might be a warning of things to come.

But Farage cashing in his chips after orchestrating one of the most divisive political campaigns in history packed full of demonstrable falsehoods won’t generate many column inches this week.

I wonder why?

‘It’s fair to assume Daleks would be fiercely pro-freedom of movement -aslongas it doesn’t involve getting up the stairs.’
