A Maidstone care home celebrated the culture of Spain as part of a virtual six-month ‘world cruise’ to promote residents’ wellbeing.

With passports at the ready, and sun and sangria in mind, residents at Nellsar’s Lukestone Care Centre, in St Michael’s Road, embraced the vibrancy of Madrid with decorations, crafts, music, and the sampling of dishes such as paella and tapas. The adventure was rounded off with some Sangria.

Ewa Woszczynska, recreation and wellbeing lead at Lukestone Care Centre, said: “Everyone was excited to embrace the culture of such a familiar holiday destination.

“It’s a great way for residents to reminisce about their own holiday adventures, with so many of them having visited Spain throughout the years, and it was lovely for them to remember those special summers abroad with their friends.” There was even a tour guide on hand to help residents make their way to their chosen ‘excursions’, which in true cruise-style included a play performed by staff called ‘The story of Ferdinand the bull’.

Resident Violet Ford, who is 92, said: “I felt as if I was in Spain, it was so realistic. I had such a lovely day.”

Ellen Smith, 81, added: “It was all good fun, the day was very colourful.”

Dubbed ‘Around the World with Nellsar Cruises’, the virtual ship will dock at a different country each month, with upcoming destinations including Italy, France and the Caribbean, before returning to the UK in August.
