Swaffer aims for top seven
Matt and Roger Swaffer head to Cadwell Park this weekend seeking more power in order to prove competitive in the latest round of the Marangoni Tyres Production BMW Championship Series.
The pair have been testing two new exhaust systems ahead of Saturday’s race, in what will be driver Matt’s first outing at the Lincolnshire track.
Sitting eighth in the overall standings, he will be looking to better three seventh place finishes so far – twice at Brands Hatch, the other at Snetterton.
The 24-year-old
builder from Newingreen near Hythe, said: “It’s a new track for me and I am going there hoping to be in the top-seven again.
“I missed out competing at Oulton Park due to the cost and distance so got no points but every driver can drop their worst score at the end of the season.”
Matt owned his first kart at the age of four.
He progressed to win the Lydd International Raceway Rotax MIX Sprint Championship twice in successive years – in 2007 and again the following year.
He moved on to production cars, qualifying on the front row on his debut at Brands in May 2010. He finished 12th last season.
Dad Roger, a former BT worker, who lives at Shadoxhurst, acts as Matt’s engineer and dabbles in second hand cars to fund the racing said: “It is all run on a shoestring and probably costs us £1,400 per meeting to take part.
“I rebuilt the engine myself, spending £1,000 in parts.”
The Swaffers have prepared a brochure hoping to attract sponsors and anyone interested should contact Roger on 07968 942938.
