Revival stuns new leaders

-

Unipet beat new leaders HSD1 33-31 in an exciting top-two Ashford League contest. HSD1, who replaced them as leaders days before, led 12-5 and 22-13 in the first two quarters, capitalising on Unipet’s off-form shooters. However, Unipet dug in and clawed back the deficit to five going into the last quarter. A superb team effort and improved shooting eventually saw them level the scores before going in front in the closing stages to claim the points. Unipet, keen to maintain the pressure on HSD1, then beat Barclays 58-23 in a match played in hot and humid conditions. Shooters Rhonda Mickelborough and star player Sally Eyre were in great shooting form as Unipet opened up a 21-2 quarter-time lead. Strugglers Barclays rallied but it was too little, too late. ANC Tigers came from behind to win 31-28 at Countrystyle. Middle-of-the-table Tigers led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, before Countrystyle crept ahead 13-12, courtesy of some sharp shooting by goal shooter Sam Holmes and goal attack Cara Mann. Countrystyle looked to be doing well at this stage with great interceptions by wing attack Jemma Britland and wing Defence Tracey Crute. But Tigers came strongly in the third taking the lead 22-20, despite strong defence from goal defence Jordon Mann and Goalkeeper Jo Willemse. Countrystyle continued to work hard, and were particularly well served by star player Terrie Ireland but lost the final quarter by four goals. Folkestone Saints are holding trials for new under-14 players ahead of fielding a team in the National Basketball League junior nationals. They take place on Fridays August 2, 9 and 16 at the Three Hills Sports Park, Cheriton Road, and cost £4. For details, contact Mark Hilton on 07456 494809 or e-mail coachhinton@yahoo.co.uk
