Big bass starting to show

- By Alan Yates

It’s time for specimen bass from the end of the Admiralty pier extension at Dover, with several fish up to 10lb landed on fresh mackerel head, flapper or fillet, fished alongside the wall in the first of the flood tide.

Elsewhere, results mainly include fish caught in the club evening events.

At Samphire Hoe, the Seabrook Sea Anglers fishing their Philpot 1 series event hooked a mix of wrasse, pouting, pollack and dogfish with the match winner, Paul Gunner, winning with 6lb. This included a pollack of 1.40lb and a ballan wrasse of 1.35lb.

Gunner was fishing at the far west end of the wall and the fish are claimed as Seabrook Angling Association records.

Second was Jake Duncombe, of Seabrook, with 1.95lb and third, Linten Warne of Hythe with 1.80lb. The heaviest fish prize went to Gunner for a dogfish of 1.45lb.

Staying with wrasse, which are experiencing a population increase at present, the best reported was from Folkestone beach by Rowan Lee, of Folkestone and that weighed in at 3lb 4oz.

Dover breakwater is also producing wrasse, plus bass, smoothhounds and dogfish.

Other club evening competition results include the Martin Walters Sea Anglers who fished two events. The first, from Folkestone pier, was won by Rowan Lee with 4lb 12oz, while on the beach, his son Melvin won with 2lb 7oz.

The latest Kent Sports casting day at Tilmanstone near Deal saw several records tumble in perfect conditions. Deal caster Steve Lewis averaged over 250 metres on each of the five leads used, with a total of 1258.48m.

Jason Carter produced the best distance of the day with a 125g club record of 263.33m.

Lewis cast the best off-the-ground distance of 235.08 m .

The club’s next casting meeting is on August 14.

The next Folkestone SAA event is a pier competition on August 9. Meet at the pier cafe from 6pm.

Deal 1919 Angling Club stage their next junior festival on Sunday, August 11, fishing from Deal pier. Contact Pat Heath on 01304 361248.

Anyfish Anywhere have an open competition on August 25 at Samphire Hoe. Call 07983 401368 for more details.

Freshwater catches include a 21lb 14oz mirror carp for Eureka Lake bailiff Lee Boxall, of Ashford.

The hot weather has made the trout fishing at Bewl Reservoir, Lamberhurst, difficult, although a number of anglers have landed eight-fish bag limits fishing buzzers deep on a fast sinking line from the boat.
