Backing for changes to crime reports

-

The county’s police commissioner has given her backing to plans by Ashford MP Damian Green to change the way crimes are recorded.

The government minister in charge of policing, is adding 12 new detailed explanations to the undetected category of crime reports, which cover cases that do not result in criminal charges being brought.

Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, Ann Barnes, welcomed the move, saying: “Victims of crime get really wound up by the word undetected. They want the offence against them solved and the offender brought to justice. If this is not the case, people expect, and deserve at the very least, some kind of explanation.

“This really is a sensible and long-awaited change that supports the police by allowing them to give a reason why a prosecution cannot take place, often because of circumstances beyond their control.”
