Blagg bags treble at annual awards night

Paul Blagg picked up three trophies at the South East area point-to-point presentati­on evening. Blagg won the awards for the leading family owned and ridden horse, the leading gentlemen’s owned and ridden horse with Iheardu, and the leading veteran jockey. Nick Pearce, who rode his 100th winner at Godstone in March before retiring to concentrat­e on training, took the leading stable award and was also a joint winner of the Ride of the Season award with Joshua Pearce. Charlie Marshall won the novice gentlemen jockey’s title in his first season as a jockey while Sarah Ashby took the award for the leading lady owned and ridden horse with Masked Man. Philip Hall retained the gentlemen jockey’s award with a third of his points for the season secured by the area’s leading horse, The Vicar, owned by Sarah and Debbie Wilkins. The ladies’ title race was secured on the final day of the season by Frankie Hickman, denying Hannah Grissell and Tabitha Worsley who shared the award for lady rider with most wins anywhere in the country. Tabitha also picked up the leading lady novice title. Rear Gunner held on to the leading homebred horse title while the David Phelantrai­ned Running In Heels was the leading novice horse. Ashford Town’s Sean Woolford has been named in the Kent squad for the county’s final Middleton Cup group match against Oxfordshir­e at Halls BC in Dartford on Saturday. The county need to win to have any chance of making the last eight. Tenterden hosted a mixed triples tournament on Saturday. Twelve teams from 10 clubs took part and the winners were the Cranbrook trio of Gill Bunch, Betty Goad and John Goad. On Sunday, Tenterden defeated Headcorn 7156 at home in a friendly. The highest winning Tenterden rink was that of Linda Harper, Margaret Knight and Peter Hogarth (21-13). Tenterden lost 66-55 at Rye in the Mermaid League. The highest winning Tenterden rink was that of Elaine Dixon, Ray Walker and Alan Haselup, who won 19-13. Ashford Rail completed the “double” over Betteshang­er with a 119-77 home victory, winning five of the six rinks. The highest winning Ashford rink was that of Tony Antino, Garry Breeds and Graham Williams who won 35-4. The ladies also won on their rink, with Janet Williams, Pauline Andrews and Linda Greenhalgh winning 20-13. Ashford Rail played Cheriton in a match of three mixed triples and won overall 68-47. The highest winning rink was that of Dennis Gibbs, Trudy Paine and Graham Williams who won 34-12.
