Saints are leading the way

-

Saints remain top of the Ashford & District Super Fivea-Side League after beating Ames 2-0. Their scorers were Andy Dryland and Jack Dryland. Second-placed Misfitts are two points behind the leaders following their 3-0 victory over Ames thanks to goals from Chris Comerford (2) and Jamie Ades, while Homebull defeated Aldington 1-0 through a Lewis Algar strike. Toby Bromley (2) and Dan Leggett scored for McDonald’s in their 3-1 win over Spartan for whom Matt Johnson was on target. Abigail Spicer scored six goals as Ashford Angels under-10s lifted their first ever trophy. They won the Shield final in the Anchorians tournament in Gillingham, beating Meridian Girls in a penalty shootout decider.

Both teams had their chances to win the game in normal time, before it went to spot-kicks.

Goalkeeper Analice Linsdell kept out Meridian’s effort, before Flo Johnson converted the winner to decide the endto-end contest. Spicer’s efforts helped Angels progress through the group stages, with Johnson, Grace Haffenden and Charlotte Pyatt the other scorers.

Aimee Sage hit five goals as Angels under-15s were runners-up in their agegroup.

They won all their group games to finish top, before goals by Sage and Olivia MacDonald clinched a 2-0 semifinal win against Meridian. That setup a League Cup final repeat against rivals Phoenix, but Angels again failed at the last hurdle.

Angels’ other scorers were MacDonald (two) and Claudia Smith and Amy Metland.

South Ashford under-11 Whites finished their season in fine style – winning the Wittersham tournament for the first time – beating Beckley 2-1 in the final.

Harry Sikirwayi was named playerof-the-tournament.
