Allotment extravaganza

-

Rare and wonderful produce was on show at the Ashford Allotment Society’s summer show at the weekend.

Members of the society – which includes growers from allotment sites across the borough – were showing off the fruits (and vegetables) of their labours of love.

More than 200 entries from a range of categories were up for best in show at the Baptist Church in Hythe Road, Willesborough, on Saturday but only one person could take the title.

It was awarded to Kirsty Cato for a beautiful tray of vegetables.

Meanwhile, the children’s prize was awarded to youngster Abbie Khandaroo, best fruit exhibit was won by Heather and Tony Ahern and best floral exhibit was a flower arrangement by Carol Reed.

Penny Winton, chairman of the society, said: “It was absolutely fantastic and really successful. We had 30 people exhibiting and 211 entries in various categories. We’re really happy with how it went.

“Categories in flowers, produce and vegetable produce, cakes, pickles and preserves and unusual vegetables which didn’t fit into the other categories.

“So we had some beautiful and unusual squashes, pumpkins and tiger tooth melons.

“There were some other fantastic entries. It was a lovely day showing how allotments are fun for all the family.”

The society is supported by Ashford Borough Council.
