Free parking plan revealed

- By Suz Elvey

Free parking on Sundays, bank holidays and late in the afternoon could soon become a reality as councillors are asked to vote on the idea.

The proposals would benefit people driving to Ashford town centre and Tenterden and, according to ABC, would support economic development.

Discount scheme

Vehicles would be able to park for free in the Edinburgh Road and Flour Mills car parks in Ashford and Tenterden’s Bridewell Lane car park on Sundays and bank holidays.

Additionally, it would be free to park in the Edinburgh Road car park after 3pm from Monday to Saturday.

Also, the Station Road car park in Ashford would be free after 3pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Finally, there could be a discount scheme within Bridewell Lane car park, Tenterden, subject to ongoing discussions with the Tenterden Parking Forum.

All the parking provisions would be carried out on a trial basis and reviewed after a year to see if they make economic sense.

The council estimated it would lose £35,000 a year in parking revenue and it would cost £5,000 to set up the scheme.

However, the authority hopes the free parking will encourage more people to visit the town centres, increasing profit for existing businesses and persuading new companies to move in.

Parking payment machines are likely to be replaced, giving drivers the option of paying by debit or credit card or phone as well as cash.

Members of the council’s cabinet will be asked to vote on the scheme at their meeting tonight (Thursday).
