Takeaway wants to sell booze with their kebabs

- By Suz Elvey

Diners who like a beer with their kebab or wine with their burger could soon be in luck as a takeaway has applied for a licence to deliver alcohol.

Crusader Kebab in Brookfield Road, South Ashford, will find out next week whether it is allowed to drop off bottles of wine and cans of lager and cider at people’s homes when they deliver the more usual doner and chips or quarter pounder with cheese.

Owner Ufuk Sen thinks the idea will prove popular and believes his company will be the only one in Ashford offering an alcohol delivery service if he gets the go-ahead at Thursday’s licensing sub-committee meeting.

He said: “There is a demand for this. Some people have asked me if they can take drink away but at the moment I can’t do it.

“If it is approved people can sit at home at night and have a delivery of alcohol so they can have a drink with their food without having to get in a car or a taxi and go to the supermarket.

“There are businesses doing this in Canterbury and other towns, but no one does it in Ashford. I hope it goes through.”

Mr Sen, who also owns Cafe Express in Ashford High Street, said although the licence would allow him to sell alcohol from the shop to take away, he does not believe people will use it as an off licence since the nearby supermarket will be selling cheaper booze.

The kebab shop adjoins The Crusader pub.

He said there would be no limit on the amount of drink customers could order, but added anyone who looked under 18 would need to prove their age.
