Folk is a familiar sound at Revelation St Mary’s but this weekend will probably be the first time toothbrushes have been played in the church.
Four shows will be performed at the Ashford venue in less than a week with the headline acts being folk singer Martha Wainwright, folk groups Steve Tilston Trio and Boy and Bear and toothbrush-wielding percussionist Manu Delago.
The daughter of folk legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and sister of singersongwriter Rufus Wainwright, Martha spent her childhood immersed in music.
She has recently been seen performing in Martin Scorsese’s film The Aviator and will likely sing songs from her latest album Come Home To Mama when she performs in Ashford.
Karen Trimmings, general manager at Revelation St Mary’s, said: “Undoubtedly her own person, with her own sense of style, Martha creates her own music with an extraordinary versatile and compelling voice.”
Austrian percussionist and composer Manu Delago is pos- sibly best known for working with Icelandic superstar Björk but has actually performed all over the world in his own right, often using household objects as instruments.
Delago is known for playing the hang, a unique metal instrument shaped like an upturned wok that produces a sound somewhere between a harp and a tabla, an Indian folk instrument similar to bongos.
He teams up with the Aurora Orchestra, which has started a new residency with St Mary’s, A discount is available when buying tickets for all three of the following shows:
