Villagers up for sporting fundraiser

Angling and a scarecrow competitio­n are among events being organised as part of Smarden Sporting September.

Villagers have come up with a month of activities to raise money for their new sports pavilion.

The angling contest is at Sam’s Lakes, of f Bedlam Lane, Smarden, on Sunday, September 20, from 8.30am to 3pm.

Anglers will draw lots for places with fishing beginning at 9.30am. Breakfast rolls will be available and there will be a barbecue lunch.

Coordinato­r Jim Naden said: “We hope anglers, friends and family will come along. Anglers must bring a current fishing permit with them for inspection. We are limited to 30, so please book now to avoid disappoint­ment.”

The closing date to register is Monday. It will cost £15 to take part.

Villagers are also being encourgaed to come up with sporting themed scarecrows to display in their garden or in the village centre from September 19 to 30.

Residents and visitors will vote for their favourites with prizes for the best creations.
