The basic e-cigarette was created back in 2003 by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik, who had the idea to make a nicotine delivery device that produced inhalable and flavored smokelike vapour.

It was designed to evoke the look and feel of smoking cigarettes.

Personal vaporisers have only arrived within the past couple of years, yet they have quickly gained popularity and now account for nearly 50% of total e-cigarette sales, say researchers.

Vaporisers, which look more like a large fountain pen than a cigarette, offer vapers more advanced and personal options.
