Smith secures memorable hat-trick

Keith Smith lifted the men’s singles title at Ashford Rail BC, beating Alan Aldridge 21-14 during the club’s annual finals day on Sunday.

He also claimed the men’s two wood courtesy of a 16-8 success over Chris Knapp and the mixed pairs partnering Ashleigh Minter to a 21-12 victory overAmy Ellis-Ingleton and Carl Akers.

Smith also made the final of the men’s handicap but went down 27-22 to Thomas Fairman, who teamed-up with Clive Allen to beat Dennis Gibbs and Tony Fortune 25-8 in the men’s pairs.

Chris Lock won the ladies’ yardstick, overcoming Mary Fortune 31-26 but she was beaten 18-11 by Mo Hayes in the ladies’ two wood.

Ashleigh Minter, Charlie Holdaway and skip Sean Farmer beat Amy EllisIngle­ton, Steve Miles and skip Gordon Samson 21-14 in the club triples, while Chris Knapp beat Steve Miles 34-29 in the club yardstick and the Junior Championsh­ip was won by Lewis Minter, who saw off Cullam Fraser 21-12.

Trudy Paine won the ladies’ handicap with a 27-20 win over beat Mary Fortune.

Rail played five mixed triples at Wear Bay on Saturday and won 114-91, led by Thomas Fairman (lead), Paul Hunter and skip Jenny Farmer (29-12), who had the highest-scoring rink.
