Kentish Express Ashford & District
Locals’ pictures are a timely reminder
It was a rarity for some of Ashford’s suburban areas to be photographed during a particular period, so it is refreshing to find pictures depicting certain parts of these communities that often bring those memories of yesteryear flooding back.
Many towns throughout the country have been subject of postcards in the past, but often we are reliant on the armchair photographer and those other professionals that have long since passed, to record features we would otherwise forget.
Postcards are often readily available, but actual photographs rarely exist.
Many local residents will, at some point, have snapped images of their neighbourhood on formats such as slide or film. Others may have even taken cine film or video.
No matter what, there has always been someone interested in their particular area, and more often than not, after some delving, it is found these pictures still exist in attics and cupboards.
I am always indebted to those readers who readily send in such material that can be shared with readers.
This week, Remember When continues the theme of Kennington, by looking back at a trio of pictures recording the one-time sleepy village in 1964 and 1967 respectively.
The colour images were kindly donated by Mrs Eastwood, a one-time occupant of Creg-ny-baa (the bungalow featured) and I thank Sylvia and Sid Marsh for the black and white picture taken by the late Bryan Sales.
