They came from 2-0 down to claim the points, skipper Sam Handley scoring twice, once in each half, before Dawson pounced to score the late winner

Handley (pictured) said: “A result likes this sends a huge message to the rest of the league.

“We have been written off, but I think it’s good for us and this result will surprise a few

Report: ANDREW GIDLEY people. I was very happy and proud of the boys.

“We started frantically because there was so much pressure on us to make an impression, with everybody saying pre-season that we were going to struggle.

“An injury to a Wells player caused a delay, which allowed us time for a few words.

“We were trying a new formation and changed a couple of things around as well.

“I then got our first goal, which we needed and changed our halftime team-talk.

“Huw (Stevens, the coach) and I said a few things and we went out and played very well.”

Goalkeeper Rob Allen, back as No.1 goalkeeper, was unlucky with both Wells goals.

He was beaten by a rebound for the first, with the second scored via a wicked deflection.

Ashford pulled one back, the Wells keeper struggling to clear with his feet, before the visitors recycled the ball on the right, Handley firing home.

The visitors hit the bar early in the second half, then had shots blocked and saved on the line before Handley got his second following a corner routine.

He acted as the injector, before getting the ball back to sweep home.

Handley said: “It was a great winner following a break down the right. Matt Reeve mishit the cross, but Allan dropped it in.

“We want to use that speed down the wing and look to keep possession more.”

“We used our experience to close the game down – it was a good way to start – and now we want to kick on.” Ashford
