Skipper still backing squad
Rhys Fussell has an appointment at William Harvey Hospital today (Thursday) to re-set his broken nose.
The Ashford skipper was forced to leave the field late in the defeat to Thanet Wanderers at St Peters Recreation Ground on Saturday, after coming off worse in a collision, but is still not ruling himself out of facing Hove at the weekend.
He said: “It happened with 10 minutes to go, I am seeing a specialist and will have a fitness test on Friday.”
Fussell is staying unbeat, despite the team’s three match losing start to the new London South East 2 THANET ASHFORD season, saying: “I believe we have the the ability and talent in the side.”
He rued his side’s failure to make the most of Thanet being reduced to 13 men in the second half, and also claimed that one of the home side’s two tries shouldn’t have been awarded after falling short of the line.
Ashford trailed 9-3 at half-time, Henry Hall kicking their points, but Fussell was delighted with his side’s first-half display,
“The boys were brilliant, and did exactly what coach Darren Hall and I wanted,” he said.
Thanet skipper, flanker David Lemon, and prop Jon WalkerSmith added two second half scores, but Fussell admitted: “We definitely didn’t capitalise on them being two men short.”
As well as Fussell, Ashford will also check on the fitness of Danny Leach ahead of the game against Hove, relegated from London 1 last season.
Leach has been troubled by a back problem.
