Kennington manager Dan Scorer described the 3-1 home Premier Division defeat against Greenways as a wake-up call.

Dave Bass’s penalty just before half-time boosted their hopes but Scorer admitted it was a frustrating afternoon.

He said; “We started well, but they gradually took control of the game after about 25 minutes.”

Aaron Kleman scored twice for the visitors and Scorer added: “He was a handful and a nuisance all afternoon – quick, strong, and he could finish as well.”

Kleman put Greenways in front on the half hour, before Bass converted his fourth penalty of the season to level five minutes before half-time.

A visiting defender handled the ball on the line, trying to clear Tom Scorer’s lob over the keeper, and was sent-off.

Scorer said: “That lifted us, so to concede a second just before halftime was disappointing.”

Kleman got a second 15 minutes from time to make it 3-1, and Scorer admitted: “Greenways defended brilliantly in the second half, Sam Conlon’s effort hit the bar and bounced down – it looked from where I was that it crossed the line.”

Wayne Beaney hit five as Rolvenden won 8-0 in their Les Leckie Cup first round clash with Yalding & Laddingford.

Ben Charlesworth, Culley Sayer and Dean Bate added the others for last season’s beaten finalists.

Manager Albert Adams said: “It was a competitive game, but we moved the ball around quite well.”

Rolvenden lost 3-2 to old rivals Lydd Town Reserves in the final at Faversham in May and Adams said: “We put in a lot of hard work last season only to fall at the final hurdle.

“Losing hurt us, because it was down to a controversial refereeing decision, and we felt a bit hard done by at the time.

“It would be nice to get there again, and go one better this time.”

Rolvenden are now at home to Aylesford.

Riley Alford took his tally to eight in three games as Willesborough Athletic bounced back from their first defeat of the season to win 4-0 at Staplehurst Monarchs Reserves.

Steve Cowell got the fourth, his first of the season.

Manager Lee James said: “We had a limited squad, didn’t play well, and got found out at Aylesford.

“The win at Staplehurst was our strongest display of the season, and had we been a bit more clinical in front of goal, it could have been double figures.”
