Legion appeal for volunteers

-

Charity bosses have appealed for volunteers to help organise this year’s Poppy Appeal to make sure everyone can take part in Remembrance commemorations.

The Royal British Legion says its small branch team in Ashford is struggling to ensure poppy boxes and poppies reach schools, workplaces and homes because of the growth of the town.

The legion’s East Kent community fundraiser, Julie Roper, says volunteers are desperately needed.

She said: “Members of the Ashford branch have managed the appeal for years but we need to get other people involved.

“It doesn’t have to be an exservice person or a legion member, just someone with a passion to help, good organisational skills and some free time to spare mainly in the October to November period.

She added: “Last year alone more than £23,000 was raised for the appeal in Ashford.

“It could be so much more if we could recruit more people to help.

“More and more families and ex-service men and women need our help. It’s important to do as much as we can to help them.”
