Ashford Barbarians conceded four first-half converted tries on their way to a 28-12 home defeat by Shepherd Neame Dragon Fire 4 East leaders Canterbury 4ths at Sandyacres on Saturday.

They trailed 10-0 before a quickly taken tap penalty in Canterbury’s 22 gave the Barbarians their first hold in the game as prop Aran Sage proved unstoppable from 10 metres out.

Canterbury re-affirmed their lead with a third score after puncturing the Baa-Baas defensive line.

The visitors added to their tally with another well-executed move from the back line.

The second half saw a huge momentum swing, with the Baa Baas’ forwards asserting their authority.

Captain Ben King led the charge, picking and driving from the ruck before crashing over for a second home score.

Fly-half Dave Ward converted the try to reduce the deficit. Despite the dominance of the home pack, Canterbury’s defence and the first-half advantage kept the home side at bay.

There was almost a late consolation score, following five-metre scrum.

A huge shove denied the opposition clean ball, debutant flanker Dave Ian seized the loose ball and crossed the line but was unable to touch down.

Ashford 3rds beat Maidstone 4ths 58-0 in the same competition.

Ashford Vets beat Canterbury Vets 10-7 with tries by Charlie Vavasour and Joe Lakin.

Ashford host the East Kent Rugby Festival at Kinneys Field on Sunday.

It involves 10 clubs and features every age group from under-7s to under-12s.

The action gets under way at 10am. Baa-Baas the final
