Muchmore victory a confidence boost

Tom Muchmore claimed his second victory of the year, winning the PGA South Pro-Am at Lee-on-Solent.

The Ashford Golf Club professional, who won in Poland earlier this year, was one of the early starters but had to wait until much later in the day to find out if his fourunder-par 65 was good enough to claim the winner’s cheque of £888.

In the end, he finished a shot clear of Paul Simpson (West Berkshire) and Mark Treleaven (Hayling Island).

It was Muchmore’s first time playing at the Hampshire club but his course management was a big plus.

He said: “I played safe and didn’t go for anything, taking a lot of irons off the tee and making 16 greens in regulation with a few putts.”

“I played well in the FootJoy PGA South Winter Series, coming close on a couple of occasions but just not quite putting the scores together for a win.

“My form’s been all right this year but winning here will be a huge boost to my confidence that I’ve got the game to win.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and it would be nice to put together some decent scores in Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit events as well as the pro-ams.”

Meanwhile, Dan Brown, from Chart Hills, won the 2016 Kent Amateur title, beating Marcus Sewell (Shooters Hill) 6&4 in a one-sided final at West Kent GC, at Downe near Orpington on Sunday.

Regional qualifying for the 145th Open Golf Championship takes place at Wildernesse Golf Club in Sevenoaks on Monday week (June 20).

Royal Cinque Ports at Deal hosts final qualifying on Tuesday, June 28. The Open takes places at Royal Troon, beginning on Thursday, July 14.
