Top five all fail as Town have off day

Ashford Town

Captain Liam Tegg criticised Ashford Town’s batting following a ninewicket defeat at Nonington in Division 2 of the Shepherd Neame Kent League.

Town slumped to 115 all out after the top five were dismissed in single figures, including a duck for Tegg.

Overseas player Saul Anstey made 31 not out at No.9 but, in the main, it was a day to forget.

Tegg said: “We just weren’t very good. We didn’t bat well enough. The wicket did a bit early on but it was still no excuse for some of the dismissals.

“It sets a trend when you lose early wickets. You’re fighting a losing battle and we weren’t able to build any partnerships. It killed us.

“The top three, me, Luke Reeves and Tim Hambridge, couldn’t do a lot, but there were some giveaways from a few of the lads.

“If we’d got 160/170 it might have been a different game but 150 is never enough. Saul batted nicely, though. He just walked out and had his timing from ball one.” C Williams c Price b Weller ...............19 T Luckhurst c Price b Weller ...............0 W Stickler c Price b Richards ..............4 A Williams c Popli b Curteis...............54 J Baldwin lbw b Weller .......................0 D Smith c Price b Vernon ..................16 S Griffin c Crawford b Vernon ............10 W Bryce-Borthwick c Ball b Curteis .....1 T Burley c Ball b Curteis ......................0 P Sadler c Vernon b Weller ..................5 F Florry not out ...................................1 Extras ...............................................12

Simon Taylor took the only Nonington wicket to fall as the hosts completed victory inside 20 overs.

Tegg added: “It was a warm day and with the sun on the wicket, it flattened out.

“It didn’t do anything when we bowled, although we didn’t bowl well either.”

Defeat saw Ashford drop to thirdbottom, a point clear of the relegation zone. They host Gravesend on Saturday. Tegg said: “I think we’ll be all right this season. The league is so close.

“Win two games and you’re up to third.”

Gary Sutton made 137 not out for Ashford Town 2nds in a Division 5 winning draw against Offham.

Sutton led Ashford to 237-2 in 46 overs.

Offham closed on 157-7 in reply, Tyron Beech with 3-23. After winning the toss and batting, the hosts made 237-8 in 40 overs with Barnes supported by Steve Dagys (56), Stuart Wise (36) and Matt Leclere (30). Barnes (3-30) snared opener Sam Killip in the first over with Leclere taking the catch at first slip. Deal were struggling at 26-2 when rain stopped play for more than an hour. But Wye took quick wickets after play resumed, with Wise (2-23), Mark Shannon (1-21), John Webster (1-26) and James Chamberlain (1-21) sharing the spoils. Only a late resurgence from Peter Moore (47 not out) and 32 from Nick Francis got Deal Victoria to 159 all out with two balls remaining, as Wye took full points.
