An Ashford council spokesman said: “The layout of the farmers’ market is designed to help people browse the stalls with ease and explore the businesses on the Lower High Street. It is not intended to obscure local businesses’ shop fronts.

“The monthly market not only brings a buzzing atmosphere to the town centre, but it also boosts town-centre footfall and attracts potential customers. What’s more, the market has received very positive feedback from local businesses.

“Although parking in the Lower High Street is not permitted when the market is on, we want to remind visitors there is always plenty of free parking available in the Edinburgh Road car park, just a short walk from the market. Ashford’s High Streets are very healthy and we do not believe the market is taking trade from our local businesses.

“Recent Ipsos Mori figures show that in the first quarter of 2016 Ashford is outperforming everywhere else in the UK with regards to retail footfall, with visitors to the town up 1.6% year-onyear. In addition, Ashford has been accepted on to the third year of the national Business in the Community’s Healthy High Streets programme, which aims to provide intensive corporate support to 100 High Streets. Ashford Borough Council will continue to support its local businesses and the rejuvenation of Ashford town centre.”
