MP deserves support for all his hard work

-

With reference to last week’s article ‘Call for MP to go after losing the fight to remain’ in which Gerald O’Brien of Ukip called for Ashford MP Damian Green to ‘consider his position’, I have to say that from my experience Mr Green has always done an excellent job. He has never shied away from acting on behalf of his electorate (of whatever political persuasion), which he always does most professionally. Unlike the leader of Ukip, he doesn’t shout, he is dedicated to the people of Ashford. He is never rude or insulting and nothing is too much trouble. It is early days in the tragedy that has unfolded since the referendum, the country has been split down the middle, Scotland is itching to leave, and Northern Ireland may follow suit and if they do there will no longer be a United Kingdom, nor a Great Britain, and both the government and the Shadow government are in chaos. Who knows what now lies ahead for our economy? It is most interesting to see one of the leading protagonists for Brexit was Boris Johnson, who was first in line to inherit the role of Prime Minister, has suddenly realised what a can full of worms he has stirred up. He has chickened out, and jumped the sinking ship rather than face the music and try to mend the fences. So we certainly need as many cool and intelligent heads to regain control of the ship. He and his cronies wanted ‘out’ of the EU, but they had no plans for what to do in the event of a ‘Leave’ outcome. We all know that the European Union isn’t perfect, but if nothing else it has created a trust, friendship, understanding and

I agree with Gerald O’Brien of Ukip that Damian Green should consider his position as our MP after the referendum. He is also out of step with many on other important issues. In April I asked Mr Green to support the Commons debate on reducing overseas aid. I like many people locally feel that this £12 billion a year could be better spent at home on the NHS, housing, our own communities and people in need. Mr Green’s position was: “I believe our aid programme is not only vital for some of the poorest people in the world, who we have a moral duty to help, but also helps Britain’s standing in the world and the security of our citizens.” (Quote from his response to me). This is the status quo government line which totally ignores public opinion on the matter. In reality much of this overseas aid goes to dictatorships where tyrants keep their people in poverty and use the aid to allow greater spending on arms. Much of the aid funding just disappears and the only beneficiaries are seemingly corrupt politicians who are unaccountable to the UK. Mr Green was elected to represent the local population. He has clearly forgotten that and has just become a government yes man. He needs to listen to the people, and start to represent our views in parliament. Otherwise he should go. I note that our MP, Damian Green, is angry at the result of the EU Referendum and cites the narrowness of the majority voting to leave the European Union. In his constituency there was a 77% turnout and 60% of the votes cast were to leave. To put these figures in context, in the 2015 General Election there was a 68% turnout and Mr Green obtained 52% of the vote. You can draw your own conclusion. Ann Achow Smalhythe Road, Tenterden
